Warden Message #12, April 29, 2009
The Embassy of the United States of America in Dili advises that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has declared a Public Health Emergency in the United States in response to outbreaks of H1N1 strain influenza in several states.
To date, there have been no/no confirmed cases of H1N1 flu reported in Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia, or Australia. However, some countries in the region are exercising heightened vigilance for suspected cases of flu at ports of entry.
The State Department has no advisory in effect applicable to travel to the United States. However, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control issued an April 27 notice recommending that American citizens avoid all non-essential travel to Mexico, where a severe outbreak of the flu is in progress. A full text of the travel warning can be found at the following link: http://www.cdc.gov/travel/.
Because the World Health Organization has determined the H1N1 flu outbreaks in several countries mean that there is a significant increase in risk for a pandemic, the Embassy advises that American citizens consult the following websites for updates on the situation and information on how to avoid contracting the flu: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ and http://pandemicflu.gov.
The Embassy will provide further information as the situation develops.
