Embassy Dili Warden Message #10, March 6, 2009

There have been disturbances in the vicinity of Comoro Markets arising from police operations to remove stalls located outside the designated market area, mostly on the North side of the Comoro road across from LEADER supermarket. At least two similar operations have taken place at the Comoro Markets in recent days, with the most recent resulting in a minor disturbance.  There have been reports that vehicles in the area during these operations were stoned.  PNTL remain in the location and some vendors have yet to be moved, which may mean that we will see further disturbances in that area.  Banana Road-Bairo Pite and the Beach Road should be considered as alternate routes to the Comoro Road for transiting the city.

The Embassy recommends that drivers be alert when approaching market areas.  If a police operation or disturbance appears to be in progress, immediately turn around and find an alternate route, or postpone your errand.  Areas that may be affected in the coming days include Bidau Lecidere, Taibessi and Becora.
