Renewing a Passport

Passports may be renewed if you:

- were at least 16 years old when most recent passport was issued,

- hold an undamaged passport that was issued within the last 15 years,

- are using same name on most recent passport or can show legal documentation (marriage or court order) to reflect change and,

- are not applying for an emergency replacement for lost/stolen passport.

Background:

1.  You do not need to appear in person to sign your application before a Consular Officer.

2.  The process may take 4 to 6 weeks. Since 2002, all U.S. passports are now printed in the U.S. The application is accepted in Dili, forwarded to Embassy Jakarta for processing, and sent to Washington D.C. electronically. Once printed, the new passport is sent by DHL to Embassy Jakarta, and then forwarded to Dili.

Fee:

The fee for renewing a passport is USD 75. This is paid in USD to the Embassy cashier in Dili. The cashier is open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Procedure:

1.  Fill out for DS-82. This form can be picked up at the Embassy during business hours or is also available online at: http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/forms/forms_847.html

2.  Drop off your application at reception during normal business hours 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. You do not need an appointment and you do not need to see a Consular Officer.  (Note: the cashier is only open 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.).

3.  You must bring to the Embassy:

- your current passport

- a photocopy of the bio data page of your current passport

- other useful forms of identification: prior passport, naturalization certificate, driver’s license, military or other government issued ID card

- 2 recent identical photos 2" X 2" (5 cm x 5 cm) in size. Pictures must have been taken within the last 6 months, with an image size from bottom of chin to top of head of between 1 and 1-3/8 inches. Photographs must be clear, front view, full face, taken in normal street attire without a hat or dark glasses, printed on thin paper with a plain light (white or off-white) background.

- Signed passport application DS-82

- Fee of USD 75 for minors and adults age 16 and older

4.  Once you submit your application, you maintain physical custody of your current passport. Your current passport will be canceled when you pick up your new passport. You will receive your ‘old’ canceled passport back immediately. Any current foreign visas in your ‘old’ passports will not be canceled, and you can bring both passports along on future international trips to show the visa.

5.  The Embassy will contact you when your passport is ready. You must then bring your current passport which will be cancelled and returned to you along with your new passport.
