Ambassador Fergin Speaks at USAID, TAF, and JSMP's Reception
April 20, 2012
Ambassador Fergin spoke at a reception hosted by USAID, The Asia Foundation and JSMP to launch the release of their new, two-volume Gender-Based Violence Manuals for private lawyers. According to Timor-Leste’s 2010 Law Against Domestic Violence, victims of domestic violence are entitled to a court-appointed lawyer; private lawyers can therefore play an important role in ensuring that the rights of victims are protected. Volume One provides a thorough overview of the legal framework for prosecution of gender-based violence, while volume two is a step-by-step guide to representing victims. This is a great step forward for victim advocacy in Timor-Leste!
