U.S. EMBASSY DILI WARDEN MESSAGE #9
Bali Bomber Terrorists Executed
November 11, 2008
This warden message is to alert American citizens traveling to, or residing in Timor-Leste, including travelers to Timor-Leste traveling through Bali, that the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, released a warden message on November 9 informing American citizens that the three terrorists convicted of killing 202 people in an October 2002 nightclub bombing in Bali were executed on November 9, 2008, by Indonesian authorities at the high security prison on Nusa Kambangan Island, Cilacap, Java.
Before their deaths, the terrorists publicly expressed hope that their deaths would trigger revenge attacks in Indonesia. Although Embassy Jakarta has no specific information about potential terrorist attacks, demonstrations by groups opposing the executions may take place with little or no public notice. To view the warden message on Embassy Jakarta's website, please go to http://jakarta.usembassy.gov/consular/WMNov0908.htm
Santa Cruz Commemoration Day
The Embassy of the United States of America also advises American citizens in Timor-Leste to exercise caution when driving after dark on Wednesday, November 12, in light of the commemoration of the Santa Cruz Massacre of November 12, 1991. In past years, streets closures due to burning tires and large public gatherings have affected traffic on this occasion. As such, we caution American citizens to be aware of their surroundings.
The Embassy Consular officer may be reached at 723-1328 for emergency. The Embassy Switchboard is 332-4684. To reach an American staff member, please dial extension 2083, 2056, or 2171.
